![]() ![]() ![]() Though he hasn't really thought it through to the end. Well, at any rate, he thinks Frodo is honestly trying to help him so he's honestly trusting Frodo now, and in his simple dementia is actually trying to help out, in his way. You do wonder: "is redemption possible for Gollum?" Certainly not he can't live without the Ring and just for the moment the shreds of his mind that are still his own are too tired/guilty/etc to keep being evil. After this we just quickly see the Oliphaunts approaching and then Gollum fishing, alone, but this is pretty much what Smeagol/Gollum's attempt at being "Good" is condensed into in the films. In this scene we pretty much see most of Gollum's actual attempt to be "nice" and help Frodo and Sam. ![]() ("it takes a very long time to say anything in it, because we do not say anything in it, unless it is worth taking a long time to say, and to listen to.")ฤก - How does this scene reflect on Gollum's apparent decision to try to actually be "good"? How does Gollum's.preference for raw meat reflect on his mental state and how far he has regressed? How does Sam's arguing with Gollum even when he's behaving *relatively* well reflect on Sam's overall capacity to trust Gollum? >Gollum and Sam begin to bicker, Gollum is upset that Sam has "ruined" the succulent rabbits by cooking them Sam in turn starts pining for real food and "taters", and generally they just can't seem to agree on anything, even food. Sam sets about to use the (till now barely used) cooking pots and gear he's lugged along since Rivendell, to try to cook the rabbits into a proper meal (supplemented by herbs they find, etc.). Disgusted, Sam takes them away, declaring that there's only one proper way to "eat a brace of coneys". The "good" "Smeagol"-side of Gollum having for the moment gained dominance in his mind, Gollum seems to honestly try to help Frodo and Sam by catching a pair of rabbits for the group to eat.
